Have your beer and Eat it too

A company on the other side of the pond has created a range of unique beer flavoured ice cream 'Frozen Pints', yep that's right ice cream that tastes just like beer! From Brown Ale Chip to Malted Milk Chocolate Stout, Frozen Pints offer seven distinctive flavours with the strongest having an alcoholic level of 3.2% which is the same as a low point beer.

This great new idea started out as an accident when someone spilled beer near the ice cream maker at Ari Fleischer's party 'We were having a party and a friend brought over the ice cream maker to make homemade ice cream' the 29-year-old New Yorker explained 'But another friend spilled a beer nearby, and I watched it happen and thought "this is a great idea!" Mr Fleischer, the creator of Frozen Pints, admitted he is passionate about craft beer and loves ice cream, so he picked up a new hobby and started experimenting with different flavours and the results are phenomenal.

Frozen Pints is available at a variety of bars and stores around Atlanta, Georgia in Peach Lambic, Honey IPA, Pumpkin Ale, Brown Ale Chip, Cinnamon Expresso Stout, Vanilla Block and Malted Milk Chocolate Stout flavours and 450ml tub retails at $6.99 (£4.33). One tub of ice cream is equal to one pint of beer - so you would have to eat a lot to get tipsy! Nonetheless, you must be of legal age to buy and consume this new bar snack.

Although Frozen Pint is not yet available in the UK, I can imagine it would taste great with a packet of Pub Original Pork Scratchings, mmm.

To find out more about Frozen Pints check out their website and watch their YouTube advert below

Brad an Jack Part 3! The Big Question (awkward question...) featuring Pub Original Scampi Supper

Here's the final instalment of the 3 part comedy sketch Brad and Jack.
This is my favourite of the lot! May be because of the awkward questions or the slow realisations...or perhaps because this whole conversations becomes very confusing as they discuss the possibility of Jack being Brad's subconscious...who knows! Either way it tickles my funny bone.

Here's the video, enjoy!
P.S. I must warn you that there's a spoiler alert if you haven't seen Fight Club. And if you haven't where have you been? Fight Club is one of the greatest films (some think that way anyway). OK enjoy!

Did you notice the video featuring one of my favourite tasty treats Pub Original Scampi Supper? It's a corn snack flavoured with scampi and lemon seasoning and if you still haven't tried it, where have you been? You can buy Pub Original Scampi Supper at major supermarkets such as Asda and Tesco or if you wish to get some from the comfort on your own home why not visit the Freshers store on Amazon and purchase them there.

Freshers Foods Brad and Jack (Part 2 The Hangover) featuring Freshers Bacon Jerky

Here's the second part of the three part comedy series Brad and Jack. In this episode Jack is experiencing a bit of hangover and can't seem to understand how Brad isn't. Watch this short clip to see the hagover/head ache debate unravel.

Also watch out for Freshers Bacon Jerky featuring in the episode. If you've never heard of Bacon Jerky before (where have you been?) it's a totally unique ready-to-eat meat snack made from 100% sweet cured bacon, available in two delicious flavours: Original & BBQ. It truly is a tasty snack to munch on at work, at home, before the gym (it's very high in protein) and just anytime anywhere. But it can also be used to make super fast bacon sandwiches that take seconds, literally. So here's how:

Super Fast Bacon Sandwich
To make 1 sandwich you will need:
- 1 packet of Freshers Bacon Jerky (Original or BBQ flavour)
- 2 pieces of bread (white or brown, it's up to you)
- Butter (optional)
- Ketchup/BBQ/Brown Sauce (optional)
- Microwave
- 2 plates

Method:
  1. Just like making an ordinary bacon sandwich, butter both pieces of bread (if you're using butter) and place onto a plate.
  2. Next open the Freshers Bacon Jerky packet and tip the jerky onto another plate and place the plate into the microwave on FULL POWER for 20 seconds. Just count to 20 in your head, no point setting the timer.
  3. Take the bacon jerky out of the microwave and if you're happy with it, transfer onto the bread. If you would like it more crispy, spin it in the microwave for another 10 seconds.
  4. Add sauce onto the sandwich (if you wish) and Enjoy!!
The best thing for me about cooking up bacon jerky is that you can enjoy a hot sandwich anytime anywhere (provided you have a microwave of course). No more cold sandwiches at work and no more waiting around for ages for the grill to heat up etc.

Where do we buy this amazing and dynamic meat snack? Well you can either find it in your local supermarket such as Asda or Tesco, or you can order it from Amazon right here. You are welcome.

Essential Summer Recipe (featuring pork scratchings of course!)

Hi there!

Hope you're all having a pleasant summer, whether you're sat in the sun enjoying an ice scream or cooling off in the shade. Here's a quick and simple summer recipe that's simply delicious:

Freshers Summer Salad

Ingredients:
- Packet of Pub Original Pork Scratchings/Crunch
- 3 tbsp olive oil
- 2 skinless, boneless chicken breasts
- 1 large cos or romaine lettuce
For the dressing
- 1 garlic clove
- 2 anchovies from tin
- Medium block of parmesan or Grano Padano cheese (for grating)
- 5 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp white wine vinegar

Method:
1. Rub chicken breasts with olive oil, season. Place pan over a medium heat for 1 min, until hot, but not smoking. Lay the chicken and fry for 4 mins. Turn the chicken over and cook for 4 minutes further.Check the chicken is cooked through by poking the tip of a sharp knife in the thickest part, there should be no sign of pink juices.
2. Bash the garlic with a flat knife and peel off the skin. Crush garlic with garlic crusher. Mash the anchovies with a fork against the side of a small bowl. Grate a handful of cheese and mix with the rest of the dressing ingredients. Season to taste. It should be the consistency of a yogurt - if it's thicker, stir in a few tsps of water to thin it.
3. Shave the cheese with a peeler. Tear the lettuce into large pieces and put in a large bowl. Pull chicken into bite-size strips and scatter half over the leaves, along with (and this is the good bit) half a packet of Pork Scratchings or Crunch. Add most of the dressing and toss with fingers. Scatter the remainder chicken and scratchings/crunch, then drizzle with remaining dressing. Sprinkle parmesan and serve straight away.

Bon apetit!

Pork Scratchings around the world

Today I will explore the different origins and adaptations of pork scratchings around the globe.

Here in the UK we refer to the fried pork rind as pork scratchings or pork crackling, most commonly, where as in other parts of the world this delicious treat is known as something entirely different, such as torresmos in Portugal.

Pork Scratchings around the world

United Kingdom - known as pork scratchings or pork crackling

USA & Vietnam - pork rind is the most common term for pork scratchings

Mexico - known as chicharron or cuerito, depending on region

Canada - known as scrunchions and oreilles de Christ which translated means Christ's ears (in the East province Quebec)

Philippines - known as chicharron and tsitsaron

Thailand - pork scratchings or should I better say khaep mu are sold in huge bags like these across the country

France - if you're in France and would like to try the equivalent of French scratchings, then ask for grattons

Portugal - torresmos and cuaratos are what the Portuguese refer to as scratchings

Spain - if you'd like to try some Spanish pork scratchings, then ask for cueritos or cortezas de cerdo

Belgium & Netherlands - fried pork rind is known as knabbelspek

Denmark - the pork crackling is called flaeskevaer

Other scratchings...
Gribenes are slightly different from traditionally fried pork rind as this Jewish snack is made from fried chicken skin. I can't comment to say whether it would be as good as the traditional pork scratchings, but I wouldn't mind giving them a go!

Celebrity Pigs

This post is dedicated to the top 10 famous celebrity pigs.

See if you can name them before you scroll down the list. (Note these are not in preference order)
Enjoy!

1. Porky Pig

Warner Bros' Looney Tunes introduced us to a range of famous characters such as Bug Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tweety Bird and Porky Pig of course, across various episodes. Porky Pig is best remembered for his catch phrase 'That's all folks!'.

2. Piglet
The cute fictional character from A. A. Milne's Winnie the Pooh books. Despite being a very small animal, Piglet tries to be brave and conquers his fears. Since the release of Disney's film Winnie The Pooh and the Honey Tree in 1966, Piglet has gone from strength to strength. He's got a whole range of merchandise from PJs to mugs to pens. He's even starred in his very own movie Piglet's Big Movie. And if that's not impressive enough, Piglet was also extremely famous across Eastern Europe in the Soviet adaptation of Winnie The Pooh Ð’инни-Пух.

3. Pumbaa
Disney's favourite warthog, Pumbaa made his first appearance in The Lion King. As part of a funny wise cracking duo with his partner in crime Timon, the comical characters live a carefree adventurous life. Pumbaa is the slightly dopier character of the two, nonetheless he is kind hearted and will go to any legths to save his friends. Following the success of The Lion King, Timon and Pumbaa went off to star in their very own TV series Timon and Pumbaa and the Lion King sequels. Both characters also make regular appearances in Disney's House of Mouse.

4. Miss Piggy

A true super star from The Muppet Show. Although Miss Piggy initially was a minor character, her capricious nature and feminine charm led her to become one of the central characters. Since the TV show, Miss Piggy has gone on to star in numerous films including The Muppet Movie, The Muppet Christmas Carol and The Muppet Treasure Island. She has also performed with The Jonas Brothers, Olly Murs on the X Factor and has appeared as a fashion judge on Project Runway: All Stars.

5. Three Little Pigs
The Three Little Pigs is one of the most famous and traditional fairy tales of all time. First published in 1890 by Joseph Jacobs in English Fairytales, The Three Little pigs is a story of how three pigs build houses of different materials to protect themselves from the Big Bad Wolf. The protagonists of the story have gone on to appear in different adaptations of the traditional tale, including musicals and a song by Green Jelly, with most recent appearance in the Shrek films.

6. Hamm
This wise cracking pig is from one of the best Disney Pixar animation films Toy Story. Hamm is essentially a piggy bank that spends his days playing games such as Battle Ship with his toy peers. Voiced by John Ratzenberger, Hamm makes a memorable appearance in all three Toy Story films.

7. Spider Pig

Spider Pig is the little pet pig featured in The Simpsons Movie. Although he makes a very short appearance in the film, he is well remembered for the Spider Pig song which is an adaptation of Spiderman of course.

8. Babe
This pig is the cute little piglet from the 1995 film Babe, which tells a story of a pig that wants to be a sheepdog. Based on the 1983 novel The Sheep-Pig, Babe was a huge success at the Box Office. The film was nominated for seven awards, winning Best Visual Effects award. The pig, Babe, returned to our screens in three years later in a exciting sequel Babe: Pig in the City.

9. Wilbur
A celebrity pig that made his claim to fame in a children's novel Charlotte's Web. Since the novel Wilbur has gone on to star in an animated film adaptation of the book, a blockbuster starring Dakota Fanning and a spin off video game based on the story.

10. Hamilton
This celebrity pig plays Hamilton in a Canadian/ American cartoon Maggie and Ferocious Beast, which is based on the books by Michael Paraskevas. Although Hamilton plays a supportive role in the TV series, he is nonetheless a memorable character. He is the best cook in Nowhere land and a bit of clean freak, and although he can be quite bossy he has a warm heart.  If you have never seen Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, you can catch it on Nick Jr.

And that's the top 10 celebrity pigs. How many did you manage to name?

Olympigs and other animal sports

Just like famous athletes, animals take part in traditional sports such as horse, hound or trail sled dog racing, as well as in more controversial activities such as, bull fighting and cockfighting. And then there’s the completely utterly bonkers yet genius (as some would say) animal sports such as snail racing and Pig Olympics. Funny or cruel, I’ll let you be the judge of that as I present to you the top 10 of the most unusual animal sports.

10. Camel Racing
Think the Grand National but with camels and robot jockeys. That’s right camel racing is a very popular sport in the Middle East as well as, Australia and Mongolia. Just like horse racing, camel racing is a sport for betting and tourist attraction.

9. Elephant Polo
This sport is played in Nepal, Sri Lanka, India and Thailand. Unlike traditional polo, elephant polo is played whilst riding elephants with two riders on each elephant, one used for steering and the other for directing and hitting the ball. Elephant polo is no longer an active sport due to the funding being withdrawn due to allegations of animal cruelty.

8. Cow Fighting
A popular Swiss event where unlike bullfighting (where a human fights with a bull), cow fighting involves one cow fighting another cow until death. This extremely popular sport, running since the 1920s, attracts around 50,000 spectators every year.

7. Camel Wrestling
A Turkish sport where two male camels wrestle, typically to a response of a female camel in heat led before them. Camels are usually named after politicians and world leaders and a successful camel wrestler can be sold for over $20,000!!

6. Cricket Spitting
Cricket spitting is exactly what it says on the tin. Place a dead cricket into your mouth and spit as far as you can. The person to spit farthest, wins! Sounds simple, right?

5. Rabbit Show Jumping
An obstacle course for domestic rabbits that have been trained to jump over different sized hurdles. So a bit like equestrian show jumping or dog agility course but with rabbits. Pretty impressive in my opinion.

 4. Snail Racing
This sport is what some people refer to as humorous entertainment. Set the snails loose and watch them run to the finish line. Except they won’t run but slither very, very, very slowly.

3. Turkey Bowl
Turkey Bowl is based on the traditional game of bowling except a frozen turkey is used instead of a bowling ball to knock down 10 plastic bottles. This annual event usually takes place around Thanksgiving. What a waste of food, you might say. Participants claim that the turkeys used were inconsumable and would have been disposed off, so it’s a win-win situation either way and it’s fun!

2. Ferret Legging
This sport is simple. Get a ferret, set it lose in your trousers and see who can keep it in the pants the longest. Just a few rules to bear in mind. Male participants only, must tie their trousers at the ankles and must go commando. The winner is the brave man that bears the longest. Cruel or funny? Well believe it or not, but ferrets enjoy confined spaces so there’s more chance of the contestant getting hurt rather than the ferret. Can’t promise the ferret wouldn’t be mentality affected though…

1. Pig Olympics
The best animal sport! Ok I am being a bit biased but this sport is pretty impressive. Just like the traditional Olympics, countries take it in turns to host the annual Pig Olympics or Olympigs, as I like to call it, where over 100 specially bred and trained piglets take part in a variety of well known sports such as football, swimming and running.

All Fools Day

April Fools day is celebrated on the 1st of April every year. On this day alone you have the freedom to play a prank on someone without worrying about the repercussions as it's All Fools Day (as long as your prank is before 12pm).
The type of prank you choose to play is entirely up to you. For example, in Italy, France and Germany, the people follow the traditional prank of taping pictures of fish onto each others back. Back in the olden days, they used to wrap a real fish in paper!
Over the recent years the media has got involved and has fooled the nation year on year with fake news stories, videos and pictures.

Here are some of my favourites:
  • Swiss Spaghetti Harvest (1957)

  • Left-Handed Whopper (1998)
Burger King published a full page advertisement in USA Today announcing the introduction of a new item to their menu: a "Left-Handed Whopper" specially designed for the 32 million left-handed Americans. According to the advertisement, the new whopper included the same ingredients as the original Whopper (lettuce, tomato, hamburger patty, etc.). However, the left-handed whopper had "all condiments rotated 180 degrees, thereby redistributing the weight of the sandwich so that the bulk of the condiments will skew to the left, thereby reducing the amount of lettuce and other toppings from spilling out the right side of the burger." The following day Burger King issued a follow-up release revealing that although the Left-Handed Whopper was a hoax, thousands of customers had gone into restaurants to request the new sandwich. Simultaneously, according to the press release, "many others requested their own 'right handed' version."

  • Flying Penguins (2008)

Happy Easter! from The Chatty Pig

Yes, it's that time of year again when daffodils begin to blossom, the sun is shining and the birds are chirping away... it's Easter time of course!! Out with the old, in with the new (and of course let's not forget the chocolate).

Now Easter is traditionally associated with the religious celebration of the resurrection of Jesus, but it is also celebrated with chocolate eggs and Easter bunnies. But what about pigs? Why is it an Easter bunny and not Easter piglet? According to the legends, the rabbit carries coloured eggs and other sweet treats to children to  initiate Easter celebrations, and so from this legend games such as, the Easter Hunt and the concept of chocolate eggs came to exist.

Now you can celebrate Easter the traditional way as you're used to, but for those that wish to do something a little bit different this year, why not try some of the following suggestions.

1. Instead of the traditional chocolate eggs, give Percy the Pig a try. This little fellow is also made up of white chocolate and real raspberries (that's what gives him that pink tint) with hand made red, blue and white shorts to finish.

Or why not try this pig trio: mother pig and two piglets, made up of white, dark and milk chocolates?

2. This pink ping shaped basket to store the chocolate Easter eggs is another great idea!

3. Decorating your own eggs? Why not do an Easter range and make up some little yellow chick, pink pigs and bunnies?

4. Send your Easter cards with pigs on them! Can't find any? Make your own. It's very simple. Or send pig themed Easter cards from this website.

5. A bit of fun but this is my favourite option - The Singing Pig - check him out right here

Hope you like my ideas but if you do need more pig-spiration then go our pinterest page

Happy Easter everybody!!!

Mother's Day Treat

Mother's Day is just around the corner, have you got that special gift?
Cards, flowers, chocolates, her favourite perfume are some of the most common gifts bought for Mothers on their special day. Why not surprise her and cook her a gorgeous meal?

I suggest this tasty Fisherman's Pie.

The recipe is very simple to follow and with succulent ingredients such as, salmon, prawns and cod, you really can't go wrong. Now the pork scratchings are optional, so it's up to whether you use them, but they do give this pie that little bit of extra 'umph'.

Happy cooking and Bon apetit!

Fisherman’s Pie with Pork Scratchings

Ingredients:
·         260g cod fillet (boneless and skinless)
·         300g salmon fillet (boneless and skinless)
·         80g king prawns
·         500g mashed potato
·         40g mature cheddar cheese (grated)
·         Handful of breadcrumbs
·         1 packet of Freshers Foods pork scratchings
·         1 pint milk
·         60g butter
·         30g flour
·         Parsley (chopped finely)
·         1 Lemon (chopped in half)
·         Salt and black pepper

Method:
·         Cut the salmon and cod into bite-size chunks and place into a lightly buttered pie dish together with the prawns, cover with the milk and a squeeze of lemon and cook gently for about five minutes.
·         Strain the cooking liquor and retain, leaving the fish in the pie dish.
·         Melt the butter in a clean saucepan, add the flour and cook until it turns to a pale biscuit colour.
·         Stir in the cooking liquor bit by bit until you have a smooth sauce to pour over the fish. Add the chopped parsley and season with salt and pepper before spooning the mashed potato on top.
·         Crunch the packet of Freshers pork scratchings in the bag and mix the contents with the breadcrumbs. Scatter the breadcrumb/ pork scratching mix over the top of the potato and then scatter on the grated cheese. Place the dish in a preheated (180C) oven for about 30 minutes, until the topping has turned golden brown and juices from the pie are dribbling down the sides of the dish.

National Pig Day 1st March

National Pig Day is an annual event held on 1st March. It is widely popular in United States, celebrated for 40 years now, but that doesn’t mean that we can’t get involved as well. In the US the National Pig day is celebrated with parties and parades in zoos, nursing homes and at sports events.

So how can you celebrate the day of the Pig?
Well you can choose to appreciate the pig by ‘giving them a break’ or in other words not eating pork that day, or you could appreciate the pig offerings i.e. indulging in all things pork made – ribs, bacon, ham, pork scratchings…etc.

Here are some ideas for you to get involved in:

  • Or why not just buy some tasty pork snacks such as, pork scratchings, bacon jerky, pork crackling, pork crunch...I could go on and on. Why don’t you have a look the Freshers Foods website for a range of tasty pork treats! www.freshersfoods.co.uk
  • Fancy giving the pig a break but still want to put your chef hat on this Pig’s day, then why not try some pig inspired dishes such as, a cake or biscuits in the shape of piglets. Check out Freshers Foods Pinterest board for more creative ideas!
  • Wear your hair in ‘pig tails’ or get crafty and make some piglet puppets or buy yourself a pig mug? It still counts! The Disney shop have some nice Piglet mugs that would be very suitable for the occasion!

You can do as much or as little as you like, but do something even if it is just sending a friend a National Pig ecard (yes, they do exist). You can personalise and send one from www.care2.com/send/catpigday1.html

And if the National Pig day still doesn’t tickle your fancy, the 1st of March is also known as Share A Smile and Peanut Butter Lovers day, so smile away, eat peanut butter (or not) and do something piggy this year!
